"The Actor's Hubris"
Long
ago you entered a city of nine gates.
Two
eyes to see.
Two
nostrils to smell.
Two
ears to hear.
The
genitals to procreate.
The
rectum to evacuate.
A
mouth to taste and speak;
exposing
one’s passions to the public view.
when
all this is finished
throw
down the high places
and
brake the images in pieces
until
they are utterly destroyed.
[becoming]
the material remains of past cultures
[devoid
of emotional content].
Heaps
which perish [silently] and which are [never again] assembled.
[surrounded
by supposed holy men and scientists]
who
are assembled below to busy themselves upon the mass of original matters:
copious
and well-documented evidence of bones and artifacts:
broken
glass vessels, cruets, mustard-pots, tumblers, wine-glasses, bottles
[where
a] certain number of cart-loads,
having
been raked and searched for all the different things,
[were
all then brought to] a big microscope that allows you to view things at
hundreds of times magnification
(This
is the actor's hubris,
to
imagine the world possessed of a single,
avid
eye fixed solely and always on him.)
[all
of this evidence was then] compiled into heaps of well organized, timely,
and concise information:
an
apparently heterogeneous collection of objects,
assembled,
it would seem, without obvious rhyme or reason
[like]
little wheels and springs of metal,
as
if someone had gutted a mechanical toy and left the parts scattered about
[these
being] the five heaps - the five parts of a person -
[which]
were empty of any nature of their own
succumbing
to an inglorious fate in the scrap heaps [of belief]
and
junk yards of America; [tombs of material desire] .
Theorists
are having a great deal of difficulty
in
coaxing a sufficient amount of variety from these rather smooth and featureless,
nondescript
things over [their] little fires [tended] under corrugated iron shelters,
But
it puts things into context surely...

leap
into the void of uncertainty
build
a machine capable of travel to the heavens.
[that
constructs] poetry immediately
[but
what are you going to do when]
suddenly
confronted with a huge mass of people who see things very differently?
Man's
existence is just the tiniest,
most
insignificant moment in the grand scheme of things.
We
know (from Pure Reason) that the objects
which
appear to us are, subjectively and transcendentally speaking,
really
no more than figments of our imagination,
a
ray of hope shimmering in the mind.
[consider,]
perhaps every death is sudden and untimely.
root
around in ideological compost heaps [if you must but]
Sooner
or later, this residential city will be destroyed and you will be evicted
I
do not wish to dwell on the ruthless,
remorseless,
efficient, step-by-step,
‘tear-back-the-top-to-allow-venting-and-
microwave-five-minutes’ [style of] killing
[moving]
systematically from room to room, from floor to floor.
There
are no `bad guys' to point your finger at
in
silent, pursed-lipped condemnation.
Read
on. It's true.
We
will NOT re-direct you around and around in a loop
Is
it getting troublesome keeping track [of yourself]
when
you fall asleep?

So,
to be fair:
Recently
I had a discussion with one very prominent composer
and
we argued about meaning
WHAT
MEANS THE MUSIC TO YOU?
One
could argue ok?
I
myself can think of only a few topics more interesting.
Interesting,
I guess, looking at the big picture
as
interpreted by untrained eyes.
p.s.
don't try to answer this question.
So
what is the answer?
Members
of this list anger very easily...
I
for example have a running argument with myself
when
a serene or crystalline moment is upon me.
However,
I cannot imagine a time in the near future
[or
the distant future for that matter]
silliness
does seem to abound.
But,
uh, what do you expect
Some
of the poems were funny,
some
made no sense whatsoever and
some
were beautiful.
second
question: Sound familiar?
A
question in my mind:
Importance
of a composer is not measurable in numbers of performances
or
how many CDs are available in shops?
p.s.
there's no doubt that Cage is important.
I
think the history of sound must be divided in two periods:
before
Cage and after Cage.
But,
uh, what do you expect
No
repetition will ever exhaust the novelty of what comes.
No
No
repetition
No
repetition will
No
repetition will ever
No
repetition will ever exhaust
No
repetition will ever exhaust the novelty
No
repetition will ever exhaust the novelty of what
No
repetition will ever exhaust the novelty of who
No
repetition will ever exhaust the novelty of why
No
repetition will ever exhaust the novelty of where
No
repetition will ever exhaust the novelty of when
No
repetition will ever exhaust the novelty of how
the
novelty of how who
the
novelty of how what
the
novelty of how why
the
novelty of how where
the
novelty of how when
the
novelty of how come
the
novelty of testing
That
wasn't anger, it was practical advice.
Why
waste your time arguing over whether or not Cage will be remembered?
it's
best to look after our own affairs
and
let historians and college students look after history.
why
exactly are you signed on to this list?
One
thing is important
John
Cage will be forgotten
[forget
Cage now get out of the Cage cage]
What
does it matter?
Cage
is dead;
make
your own music,
Not
that globalization doesn't cast the shadow of a Republican
experimental
music,
even
some composed by Americans,
is
still being made around the globe.
The
vast majority produces nothing but noise,
[but]
all sounds are worthy of note
the
key is
The
American idea of success:
shouting
louder
than
the [other] people
[followed
by] very intelligent criticisms [and] superficially "easy" [commentary]
[saturated
in] the omnipresence of advertising
this
in no way has to do with the quality or importance
Does
anyone know if that is the case, and if so, where it can be obtained?
Anyone
know anything about this?
Does
anyone know if there is any book or any thesis?
The
fact that we *don't* hear a nearly sufficient amount of experimental music
in
American concert halls or on many university campuses
[is
because composers are not using these venues any more]
[They
are] Mapping [from] the Studio
[and]
in a second-hand bookshop in Germany
I
am looking
Try
looking up
Just
wanted to say that it's nice to see
My
view is, naturally, colored by living
As
I said, make your own music.
I
am planning to work
writing
has had quite a significant impact.
That
was the answer,
do
you have any [other] suggestion?
Hope
this helps.

just got a new webcam
to
be honest, I think my scanner gets lonely
It's
not a very bright computer peripheral
It
gets jealous: they can’t stand the sight of each other
[the

Most
users don’t even think about such things.
[but]
you can have a keyboard lockup, all your data lost
or,
worst case scenario - damaged motherboard
from
an [angry] scanner
You
really can make friends [with your scanner]
by
scanning very interesting samples
[so]
I just collect images from all over:
daily

old
books from thrift shops,
and
now off the net too.

I wanted to let you in on the secret.

ALL bizarre images created from destruction.
